Fear is not normal for the Christian believer. If fear is taking over your life then you need to do something about it quickly. Start this 7 day prayer challenge.

Fear often takes hold of our thoughts and emotions, guiding our choices, actions, and conversations. That’s why the Bible encourages us with “fear not” more than 365 times!

These 7 secrets to overcome the Spirit of Fear are rooted in scripture. I want to show you that God promises you peace and a sound mind. He’s also committed to helping and rescuing you from all your fears.

Always remember, God’s power is more than enough to do incredible things in your life. His power heals, sets free, removes obstacles, restores relationships, gives you strength, changes the atmosphere around you, opens closed doors, and makes a way even when it seems impossible.

Prayer Against Fear:

O’ lord, remove all doubt within me. Cause me to be fearless and faithful. Thank you for healing my mind and removing thoughts that bring death. Strengthen my soul O’ Lord and give me the strength and strategy to stand strong despite any trials. Empower me to make brave steps into your purpose and will for my life. I love you father and know that you’re capable of the impossible, so I praise you. Amen.
 

1. Read and Study The Word

Reading and studying the word of God will help you to understand the promises that God has for you life. Also, reading the word ignites faith within you, which will help you to believe the promises in the Bible.

A major promise in the Bible is found in Isaiah 26:3: “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.

The Bible instructs “do not fear,” “fear not,” and “don’t be afraid” 365 times. God is clear that fear should not be a normal everyday experience for the Christian believer. If you’re feel as if fear is controlling your decisions, feelings, and actions. God wants you to live in peace even while you’re in a difficult trial.

The spirit of fear is an oppressive spirit that takes advantage of our pain and distrust in God. It whispers lies to us, so we put our trust in ourselves, people, earthly things and not God. “When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44) Ultimately, putting our trust in anything but God is idolatry. To break free from the spirit’s influence, one must trust God, adopt heavenly perspectives, renew the mind, and draw closer to God.

2. Renew Your Mind

Reading the word helps us to understand how God wants us to think.

For instance, In Isaiah 41:10, God said: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” This command is God’s way of saying, don’t focus on what is going wrong, but focus on His POWER to help.

Additionally, the Scriptures provide additional guidance on the nature of our thoughts. In Philippians 4:8, Paul encourages believers: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” This verse highlights God’s desire for our thought life to align with principles of positivity, truth, and purity.

Essentially, God wants to help train us to think positively. After all, the bible says do not be afraid over 365 times (based on version). The repetition of this phrase shows God is serious about his command – we should NOT accept fear 365 days of a year. 

If God commands us “do not fear” then that means it is possible to live without fear.

2. Prayer and Thanksgiving

In Philippians 4:6-7, God asks us to come to him in prayer about all that causes us anxiety and fear. He also mentioned that we should approach prayer with “supplication” and “thanksgiving”. 

  • Prayer is simply talking to God, it’s a method of communicating with our Heavenly Father.
  • Supplication is a component of prayer where individuals humbly express their needs, concerns, or desires with a deep sense of dependence on the God.
  • Thanksgiving entails being grateful for all God has done for us and will do for us, even when things are tough.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

As an additional benefit of approaching God in prayer, Philippians 4:6-7 promises peace to the believer who makes their requests known to God through prayer. When you share your problems with God, He provides a peace that surpasses all understanding. God is faithful and does not break promises.

Many of us have felt defeated in the realm of fear, but we must maintain FAITH that God does not lie or change His mind. If He assured us of peace in the Bible, then we should patiently wait for the actual peace He promised. And the best part is you don’t have to pretend, you simply have to faithfully await the genuine peace.

4. Have Faith

Our strongest weapon against fear is believing in the word of God. We must believe that God doesn’t break His promises. The bible says, “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6) 

Do you have faith that God will remove fear from your life? Psalm 34:4 demonstrates that God is capable of helping you overcome fear: “I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.”

You can use these biblical affirmations and declarations during hard situations to train your brain to remain faithful in difficult situations. Here are a list of affirmations for you to fight renew your mind:

5. Remember His Goodness

Looking back at testimonies of what God has done for you in the past is an amazing way to fight fear. You can also glean from the testimonies of the people in the Bible and people around you. Testimonies help us remember that God always shows up and works all things out for our good.

Additionally, testimonies are a reminder that God will not put to shame (Psalm 37:19) those who put their hope in Him. He may not give us what we want in the way we expect, but He will provide what we need. He will take care of us.

Here are four powerful Bible stories of how faith can overpower your fear:

  1. Paul in the Prison Cell: Paul was locked up for preaching the Gospel. God caused an earthquake to crack open the prison cell, and Paul was able to leave safely.
  2. Multiplication of Fish: A large group of people were following God, and they grew hungry. But there were only 7 fish and some loaves of bread. (Matt. 15:34). God supernaturally multiplied the food, and He fed them. This story shows that if we focus on God, He will supply our needs.
  3. Sarah’s Pregnancy: Sarah and her husband Abraham were past childbearing age. But God opened her womb and helped her have a son.
  4. Lazarus: Lazarus died, and Jesus raised him up from the dead. This foreshadows the death of Christ and the believer’s victory over death!

You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.” Psalms 77:14

6. Wait on God

Don’t stop believing because your situation seems impossible. It’s never too late for God to act. God is capable of doing the impossible! 

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9

You may be going through a situation that seems hopeless, but God is’t finished with your story. Though God may not act when you want, be comforted that He loves you and will act in accordance to what you need. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.Romans 8:28

The story of Lazarus also illustrates the principle of waiting on God. When Lazarus fell ill, his sisters, Mary and Martha, sent for Jesus. However, Jesus deliberately delayed His arrival. Despite Lazarus dying in the meantime, Jesus, in His perfect timing, arrived and raised Lazarus from the dead, displaying God’s glory in a profound way. This narrative emphasizes that even in situations that seem beyond hope, waiting on God can bring about miraculous and redemptive outcomes. (John 11:43-44)

7. Stand Firm in the Promise

God promises us peace and a sound mind: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 Therefore, If God continuously commands us “do not fear,” that means our He is seriously about you receiving abundant life and peace internally.

In contrast, the enemy wants you to live in fear and to constantly fight to feel safe. But don’t focus on His fiery darts -what’s going wrong in your life. Instead, “walk by faith and not by sight or [emotions].” 2 Corinthians 5:7

And remember, You are a child of God. Children trust that their parents are strong and can do anything. They believe their parents will take care of the things they can’t. Do you believe you have a powerful father in heaven that will protect you? Do you believe you can overcome the spirit of fear? The enemy wants you to believe that you have to protect yourself and that your situation will be hopeless.

Your father hears your prayers. “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. “You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? If they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.” – Matthew 7:7-11

In this challenge, you will spend time getting to know God more. The purpose isn’t to make your prayers “stronger”, make God listen to you, or to earn God’s healing or love. Spending time with God through prayer, reading the word, and fasting should cleanse your mind and help you to know that God is worthy of your trust. Essentially, you are called to have faith like a child because God is a good father that will take care of his precious children.

Is being fearful a sin? Being fearful is not a sin, but it can cause you to do sinful things. Just submit your fear to God, so that the enemy can’t tempt you to sin. The enemy will prey on your strongest fears. You may be afraid that God won’t help you with finances, so you may steal. Or, you may be afraid you’ll loose a friend, so you’ll do deceitful things to keep them close. The list goes on.

    I have always struggled with fear and aniexty but I now know that God loves me unconditionally and he has never stopped loving me.

        Most of this information was useful but some quoted scriptures were incorrect, such as the 7 loaves of bread and 7 fish, this is incorrect. Scripture says in Matt 14:17 Jesus fed with five loaves of bread and two fish.

          I actually just realized this myself. Jesus fed the multitude of 5,000 and 4,000. In the first he had 5 loaves and 2 fish. Later, in Matt 15:34 he had 7 loaves and some fish (which I misread as 7 fish — my apologies).

    Fearful oppression is terrible. My mother and I both have often been led by fear but I do not want to live this way any longer. I want and hope to grow in faith and overcome fear, to instead live by trusting God
